Sherman's Own "Free Little Library"
By now you’ve probably noticed the small, green house on stilts sitting in front of our school. You may have even seen the books inside of it. Welcome to the Sherman Community Library, part of the Little Free Library system of neighborhood book exchanges.
It all started last spring while on a walk with my husband. We noticed a similar structure in a neighbor’s yard, borrowed a book, and got hooked! I checked out the Little Free Library website (www.littlefreelibrary.org) and read their mission.
“To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations."
I then knew we needed one for Sherman! With the carpentry skills of Mr. White, and the generous donations of books by our community, my class was able to give the gift of a neighborhood book exchange.
Please stop by and take a book, or leave a book. There are books for all ages and interest levels and your patronage is what will keep this library vibrant for years to come. This year, watch the space around the library as it is transformed by students into a reading oasis with native plantings and seating areas. If you would like to contribute to a neighborhood space, please let me know! Until then, get reading!
